How to use this hub
- Find the month you need. Each month page has modern and traditional stones.
- Check the zodiac tie-in if the recipient is a Pisces-Aquarius border birthday or similar.
- Read the gift section of the month page for carat, cut, and price context.
- If the modern stone does not fit the recipient (too soft for a daily ring, not a color they love), consider the traditional alternate or a zodiac tie-in.
The twelve months
Modern versus traditional
The modern US birthstone list was set out by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912 and has been amended a handful of times since. It is the list a jeweler will default to when you walk in and say “my mother’s June birthstone”. Traditional lists predate it and vary widely.
Hindu Navaratna, Tibetan mystical systems, and earlier European lists tied to zodiac months often give different stones. Where the lists meaningfully differ, each month page shows both.
Zodiac overlap
Each calendar month spans two zodiac signs. Aquarius runs into Pisces across February; Pisces into Aries across March; and so on. Some readers prefer the zodiac stone to the birth month stone, particularly for a recipient who knows their sign before their birthstone.
Every month page links to the two zodiac pages that span it. The zodiac hub is the other way into the same material.
Gifting by birthstone
- Everyday ring: choose a birthstone with a Mohs hardness of 7 or higher and tough fracture behavior.
- Pendant or earrings: softer stones are fine because they do not take impact.
- Heirloom piece: prefer natural certified stones over lab grown where provenance matters to the recipient.
- Budget gift: semi-precious alternates to the main birthstone can be beautiful and often cost a fraction of the main stone.
Why this hub exists
Birthstone searches are the most common way readers find this reference. A single place that answers the question carefully, lists every month, describes the tradition, and does not pretend a single answer is obvious when history shows a richer picture.
