Which stones are faked most often
- Turquoise — dyed howlite or magnesite is the most common fake in the US crystal market
- Citrine — most commercial citrine is heat-treated amethyst (a real stone, but not natural citrine)
- Amber — plastic copal mimics amber convincingly until tested
- Ruby and sapphire — glass imitations are common in low-price markets
- Opal — synthetic opal is real but must be disclosed; glass imitations with foil backing exist
- Obsidian — black glass is geologically similar to obsidian but is manufactured, not natural
- Rose quartz — pink glass is sold alongside real material in bulk bins
- Lepidolite — dyed purple quartz is substituted for the distinctive mica mineral
Test 1: temperature check
Hold the stone against your cheek or inner wrist for 10 to 15 seconds. Real crystals and gemstones stay cool longer than glass or plastic. Glass warms to skin temperature quickly. Most quartz-family stones remain noticeably cool for 30 or more seconds.
Limitation: this test is directional, not conclusive. Some real stones warm faster than others. Use it as a first screen, especially for suspected glass fakes.
Test 2: weight (heft)
Real gemstones are typically denser than glass or plastic. Hold the suspected stone alongside a confirmed real stone of the same size. A fake plastic or resin piece feels surprisingly light. Real hematite is noticeably heavy; plastic hematine is not.
For any stone over $50, look up its specific gravity (density). Weigh it with a postal scale and measure water displacement. Compare the result to the published specific gravity for the species.
Test 3: inclusions under magnification
A 10x jeweler's loupe costs $10 to $25 and is the single most useful crystal-buying tool. Glass fakes show rounded gas bubbles trapped inside — a telltale sign of molten material. Real crystals show natural inclusions: needle-like rutile, fracture planes, growth tubes, and liquid inclusions.
Perfectly inclusion-free stones at low prices are suspicious. Real clear quartz usually has at least minor veiling or fractures visible at 10x. Glass is more consistently clear and shows swirl flow patterns from cooling.
Test 4: price red flags
If the price is too low for the claimed stone, it is almost certainly not what it claims to be. Research the realistic wholesale price for any stone before buying. A "top-grade ruby" at $20 is glass. "Paraiba tourmaline" at $50 per stone is likely blue-dyed quartz or glass.
Test 5: UV light
A $10 UV flashlight reveals fluorescence patterns. Many real gems fluoresce specific colors: ruby shows strong red under longwave UV, amber shows pale blue-white, diamond often fluoresces blue. Glass and plastic usually show weak or wrong-color fluorescence.
This test is species-specific. Learn the expected UV response for the particular stone you are testing before drawing conclusions. Some real stones show no fluorescence; absence alone is not proof of fake.
Test 6: scratch and hardness
The Mohs hardness scale predicts what a stone can and cannot scratch. Real sapphire (Mohs 9) will scratch glass (Mohs 5.5). Glass sold as sapphire will not scratch steel. A hardness pick set ($15 to $30) tests specific values. Scratch on an inconspicuous spot only.
Common benchmarks: a copper coin is Mohs 3, a steel knife blade is Mohs 5.5, a glass plate is Mohs 5.5, a hardened steel file is Mohs 6.5. Real quartz at Mohs 7 scratches glass; real corundum at Mohs 9 scratches everything except diamond.
Test 7: hot needle test for amber
Touch a heated needle to an inconspicuous back surface of a suspected amber piece. Real amber (fossilized tree resin, 30+ million years old) produces a faint pine-resin or sweet smell. Plastic smells like burning plastic. Copal (young resin, not true amber) gives a similar pine smell but softens more quickly than old amber.
Use this test only on amber or suspect amber. It is destructive in a tiny way; use only on the back or base. Do not use on stones with surface treatments.
Test 8: seller transparency test
Ask the seller 3 questions before any purchase over $40: What country does this stone come from? Has it been treated (heat, dye, irradiation, fracture-fill)? What is your return policy? A legitimate seller can answer the first 2 and will have a clear written return policy. Evasion, vague answers, or aggressive pushback on treatment questions is a warning sign.

- Social media shops (Instagram, TikTok) without return policies

When to get professional testing
For any stone you are considering paying over $300 for, send it to an independent gemological laboratory before finalizing the purchase or immediately after if the seller has a return window. Lab reports ($50 to $300 depending on stone and lab) are always worth the cost against that price point.
