Method 1: Moonlight
Place stones on a windowsill or outside under the moon for one night. Full moon is traditionally considered the most effective but any clear night works. Moonlight is safe for virtually all stones — it does not cause fading, cracking, or water damage. This is the most universally recommended method.
Particularly recommended for: moonstone, selenite, labradorite, lepidolite, and all water-sensitive or light-sensitive stones.
Method 2: Sunlight
Direct sunlight for 1 to 4 hours is a charging method in many traditions. Sunlight is effective but comes with important cautions. Several stones fade irreversibly in UV light and must not be left in direct sun.
Method 3: Sage and smoke cleansing
Pass the stone through smoke from burning sage, palo santo, cedar, or other herbs for 30 to 60 seconds. Smoke cleansing is safe for all stones and has roots in many Indigenous North American traditions. Use in a well-ventilated space. If you choose to use white sage, be aware of its cultural significance and consider alternatives like rosemary, cedar, or palo santo.
Method 4: Sound cleansing
Place stones near (not inside) a singing bowl and strike or rim the bowl for 5 to 10 minutes. Alternatively, use a tuning fork, bells, or a recorded sound bath. Sound cleansing is safe for all stones and is particularly useful for large specimens that cannot be easily moved.
This method is also practical for fragile stones like selenite and celestite — do not place them inside a metal bowl where vibration could crack them.
Method 5: Earth burial
Bury the stone in garden soil or a pot of dry earth for 24 hours to one week. Earth cleansing is considered grounding and thorough in many traditions. Safe for most stones with moderate to high hardness. Keep softer or soluble stones out of wet soil.
Method 6: Water cleansing
Hold the stone under cool running water for 30 to 60 seconds, or place it in a bowl of water for a few hours. Water cleansing is intuitive and traditional. However, many crystals are damaged or dissolved by water and this method requires care.
Method 7: Selenite plate or bowl
Place stones on a selenite plate, slab, or in a selenite bowl overnight. Selenite is traditionally considered a self-cleansing stone and is said to cleanse other stones placed upon it. This method is safe for all stones and requires no monitoring or prep. A selenite plate ($10 to $30) is one of the most practical everyday cleansing tools.
Method 8: Visualization
Hold the stone in your hands. Breathe slowly and visualize white or golden light filling and surrounding the stone, clearing away any accumulated energy. Hold this image for 2 to 5 minutes. Visualization is safe for all stones, requires no materials, and is always available as a method regardless of location or setup.
Many practitioners use visualization as a daily maintenance practice between more thorough monthly cleansing methods.
Method 9: Brown rice
Bury the stone in a bowl of dry brown rice for 24 hours. Brown rice is said to absorb negative energy. This method is particularly recommended for stones associated with protection work or that have been in difficult emotional environments. Discard the rice after — do not eat it.
This method is safe for all stones. It is a good option for stones that cannot be placed in water, direct sun, or soil. The contained environment also makes it easy for fragile pieces.
